Zubia

The Constant Princess

Zubia is the village where a visit to view Granada’s formidable fortifications turns into a sudden confrontation with Moorish cavalry. With escape or defense impossible, Isabella of Castile leads her daughters to the roof of a nearby house to watch the attackers; from there, Catalina of Aragon learns that their champion Yarfe has come for Hernando Pérez del Pulgar.

Setting and Exposure

Isabella of Castile and her children are visiting Zubia so the queen can see the fort’s impregnable walls for herself. They have ridden out with only a light guard. When the fort’s gates open and the Moors pour out, the commander rushes into the village square in horror. At first, the alarm is that the full army is advancing. The royal party is too exposed to return to camp: the princesses cannot outrun the Moorish horsemen on their Arab stallions, and there is nowhere to hide or make a stand.

The Roof and the Raiders

In haste, Isabella climbs the crumbling stairs of the nearest house, pulling Catalina by the hand as her sisters follow. From the flat roof, the queen insists on seeing what the attackers intend. The force proves to be a raiding party rather than the entire army, but its leader makes the threat vivid: Yarfe is described as a giant, dark as mahogany, with a glint of a smile beneath his helmet. He rides a huge black horse whose bared teeth and snarl make it seem almost doglike as it faces the watching guard.

The Encounter’s Significance

From the rooftop, Catalina recognizes that this is not an anonymous incursion. She asks her mother who the man is, and Isabella identifies Yarfe as the Moor who has come for their friend Hernando Pérez del Pulgar. The scene turns the earlier celebration of Hernando’s daring into immediate danger: the royal family’s admiration for him is now joined to the knowledge that an enemy has sought him out. Zubia’s brief shift from a place of royal inspection to a vantage point over an armed raid gives the episode its tension, as the queen and princesses can witness the threat but cannot control what happens below.
